Not all Jews consider Zionism the center of their lives. I am more puzzled by the fact that women can live there. Iran was a modern, secular, and educated nation before Khomeini.

original jews were prisoners in babylon, cyrus made them free, not all of them returned to Ur Shalom, some choose to live in persia, from those times jews had a presence among persians. but those jews are not like european jews, european jews are descendants of khazar turks who converted to jewish while jews from middle east are descendants of original jews and are semites. currently israel denies this because this matter can bring political consequences for them (arabs claim that most jews have turkish ethnics and have no right to settle in israel!), but it does not sound credible because jews in israel are living together and well mixed.

Those Jews who didn't leave Iran in earlier years, mostly can't leave now. The Iranian government won't let them leave as family units. If one person leaves, the rest of the family can't get permission to board planes. Those left behind are at risk of being accused of conspiracy to spy. They also can't take their belongings or money or elderly. It's very hard to know exactly what's going on inside Iran with the Jewish community. Family that's in Iran already (left much earlier) doesn't like to say much because it puts their family inside at risk.
